Michael Emerson, âgé de 51 ans, s'est révélé sur le tard en tant qu'acteur. Avant de jouer devant la caméra, il griffonnait avec son crayon : Emerson a longtemps été illustrateur pour des journaux tels que le Boston Globe et le New York Times.
Diplômé de la célèbre Performing Actor Training, il fait des apparitions sur les écrans à partir de la fin des années 90. Il joue dans les films The Journey et The Impostors. Ses performances le font remarquer, il glane un rôle en 2000 dans une série télé, The Practice.
Michael Emerson va ensuite enchaîner les apparitions ponctuelles dans d'autres séries, comme X-Files, New York Section Criminelle, FBI : portés disparus... En parallèle, il continue sa carrière sur grand écran : il participe à l'excellent documentaire The Laramie Project puis au film d'épouvante Saw. En 2005, après avoir joué dans La Légende de Zorro, il obtient le rôle d'Henry Gale dans Lost, personnage controversé et mal-aimé.

bon alors j'ai posé la question à Edith (c'est une modo du fofo US et qui me réponds souvent), elle lui a elle meme posé la question pour savoir si on pouvait voir ses oeuvres. Il lui a répondu que c'était impossible de les voir car ses oeuvres sont la propriété du Boston Globe, le journal pour lequel il a travaillé.

Participated in a staged reading of a play (involving string theory) written by Jacquelyn Reingold called String Fever at Rockefeller University in 2003.

Was the voice of George Washington in Favorite Son, a 2003 experimental documentary film about the relationship between George Washington and Alexander Hamilton.

Participated in a benefit reading for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, He portrayed a feisty Maui the demigod, then chilled the audience as a tiny old Japanese woman innkeeper in an obake (ghost) story, with Terry O'Quinn and Daniel Dae Kim as wayward travelers. Emerson even learned pidgin, with the help of intense coaching from Honolulu Theatre for Youth company actor BullDog. He and other actors from LOST helped raise nearly $20,000 for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, with selected readings from HTY's 2007–2008 season of plays, in a benefit that drew a packed Tenney Theatre on March 4, 2007.

Participated in a benefit reading for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, in Honolulu Theatre for Youth Lost Fundraiser (October 25, 2008). The reading focused on Shakespeare's play-within-a-play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Emerson read the part of Pyramus .
